When I first caught wind of the Tigers wanting to boycott the game against byu I couldn't believe my ears. Then when I heard the reason I was quite underwhelmed. I was hoping that they were taking a stance against the new standings on children of gay parents not being able to be baptized into the lds organization of which byu is an extension of. Many will say that it is a private institution and it is their right to set whatever bigoted rules they want. That is true, but it is also true that by other schools being willing to play teams from byu they are helping fund this hate machine. With 100 plus people involved with the football team I am sure there are at least a few people among them. It would be nice to be able to ask Michael Sam, a gay, black, former Mizz player, how he feels on the subject.
Now these policies of the mormon organization are seeping into the secular world as seen by the actions of Judge scott johansen (a byu alum) in the case of Beckie Pierce and April Hoagland, a lesbian couple, and their foster child. So I ask the Missouri football team (as well as other schools and individuals) to make their stand against bigotry on both legs. In addition, please take a moment to visit the following link. Thank you.
