I'm not sure if any of you have caught this program called "Bluegrass Underground" which airs on PBS, but if not I suggest you look it up. It is filmed in a cave 333 feet underground in the Cumberland Caverns in Tennessee. I hope sometime to see a cover of "Cumberland Blues".

Wonder Buns

Please, I ask that instead of skipping over the text and scrolling down to see a picture of my wonder buns you take the time to read this post. It may present ideas in a new light. Also its not like my buns will just be hanging out exposed to the elements. They will be properly protected.

Yesterday I went grocery shopping and instead of buying my usual twelve pack of Wonder buns for $2.98 I had to buy an eight pack for $3.58. This added expense, minor though it may seem, I credit to the unions, and in this case specifically the teamsters for putting Hostess/Wonder out of business. Up until about forty years ago the unions were a good idea. They began with making safe and reasonable conditions for workers as well as competitive wages and benefits. It sure was a good idea until greed got in the way. Suddenly it was hard to tell the union leaders from the company executives that they complained about. They brought to fruition the cliche "what you hate you become". They were raking in millions and companies began to struggle.  In the '70's we saw the exodus of businesses from America. It greatly accelerated through the '80's and '90's. Even Levi's closed their US factories. The once good idea that created better working conditions has spent the last several decades eliminating them. We still have companies leaving and/or closing due to union demands. Oddly most of the people that support the unions also support "immigration reform" ie amnesty for illegals having broken our laws. Fewer jobs but lets welcome more people?  The teachers unions even object to their members having to meet performance standards! Thats your children they are supposed to be caring for. 

I don't really have a point to all of this. Just expressing thoughts and opinions. In closing I must say that I am highly disappointed in the voters of WI for contributing to the victory of the arrogant one. You had done so well on the Governors recall election. What happened?

Speaking of offending people

I have to admit that I wasn't too thrilled about the news I woke up to this morning, but instead of being all doom and gloom about another three months with this monkey in the white house (No offense to monkeys) (and I say three months because maybe he will be removed from office before his next term. How? Who cares?) I decided to look at the silver lining. A golden opportunity to offend some people. So whenever someone gave me lemons about the election results I gave them back lemonade in the form of  "Well thats what you get when you send a Mormon to do a mans job!" Of course I found this lemonade to be refreshing, my co workers, well they never know if I'm joking or not in the first place and Jimmy crack corn...So refreshed by all of my work at the lemonade stand I decided to go to this small thrift store downtown. In over a year I have never bought anything there, that is until today. Look at these beauties! $2.00!

To many it may be no big deal. A used pair of Levi's. A new pair of 501's is almost $50.00, and even in most thrift stores a good used pair can go for up to fifteen. But these are not just any 501's, these are redlines. Even better than just redlines these are a pair of Big E's, this model being produced from '68-'71. I'll be putting them upon Ebay tonight and hope to get 200 for them. More would be nice but off of a two dollar investment even 100 is a gift horse I'd be willing to kiss. 

On a closing note the Dow closed down 312 points today. Thanks obama.  Great new beginning! 

Moving ? Again?

Yes thats right. I am packing things up and getting ready for another move this weekend. Believe it or not I really don't like to move. It is just something that I feel I need to do from time to time. I am amazed at the miles I have put on just by moving. I think my shortest move was from Pocatello ID to Richland WA. Maybe three hundred miles as the crow flies. Of course the longest was Medford OR  to Manchester NH. Well with where I am now I cant go completely across the country but I will be going all the way across the parking lot. I know, will I ever settle down? Will I ever grow up?

I'm not sure where to begin. It's all about today, but today wouldn't have happened without yesterday. and yesterday without the day before that. I suppose it is best to go back a couple of weekends. It was a Friday like any other Friday. I decided I would put away a few beers and I did. Saturday a.m. I woke up feeling fine, that is until the teethache hit. Yes teethache. Man it was serious pain that lasted over four days. Skip ahead to this past Monday. I went to see the dentist. Put them in the same category as lawyers. All tolled 5300 plus to fix all of the problems. Well fuck. I spent that evening in a state of bewilderment. Tuesday rolled around and I found myself in a miserable state at work. The only saving grace was I knew the new Dylan cd was coming out. All morning I kept checking to see if the broad had put it out yet. No. No. No. I was wondering if the local conspirators had banned the release of if it was just do to the uselessness of this employee. I cheated and looked to see where the new releases were kept. Ah, here it is. A big grin spread from ear to ear across the back of my head. That was it. That was was when I decided to forget about the teeth and quit worrying about money (at least for the time being). At the end of my shift I picked up the cd and a package of chocolate chip cookie dough. It was the start of a great day.

 It rained all day which is very unusual around here. Some areas had 4" and widespread flooding occurred. Up on the Santa Clara river a dike was broken which shut down many roadways, businesses and schools. So today I decided to take a walk up the Virgin river, which is right behind my complex, up to where it meets with the Santa Clara. I stepped out the front door and was instantly bathed in sunshine. At the same moment Duquesne Whistle, the first track on the new cd started. I felt like I was walking into a video. It was a great walk. Listening to the music and seeing how high the water was and how high it had been. There were deer tracks right behind the brick wall of the apt. complex so I new it had pushed the deer out of the woods quite a ways.As I contemplated the music I start to think about the rubbish the critics were saying. All the reviews have been good, but they used words like "dark" "violent" "bitter". Well yes and no. Couldn't the same be said of Blood On The Tracks? Isn't " Tin Angel" just like "Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts"?  "Long and Wasted Years" "If You See Her Say Hello"? "Scarlet Town" "Idiot Wind"?

Over all I have to say it is an exceptional album. Great music and narratives. All songs are classically Dylan, reminiscent of not only his last several albums, but also other periods of his career. "Long and Wasted Years"  seems to have come straight off of "Knocked Out Loaded". The title track Tempest is a tale of the Titanic that musically seems to have come out of the civil war. Of course there is the always present blues influence and some country swing. "Pay In Blood" reminds me of a Keith Richards song and also of a tune off of Mick Taylor's first solo album. Pick it up, take a stroll. Its a great way to weather life's tempests.
